The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
